Charlie Parker (1920 - 1955) è stato uno dei musicisti più innovativi e influenti dell’intera storia del jazz. Come Louis Armstrong, ha preso in mano la musica delle precedenti generazioni e l’ha fatta progredire da tutti i punti di vista: melodico, ritmico e armonico. Grazie a lui tutti gli strumentisti e i compositori del jazz di ogni epoca successiva sono stati stimolati a ridiscutere completamente la loro arte. [...] L’arte di Charlie Parker ha brillato di una luce che non può essere completamente spiegata, e solo l’abusato epiteto di “genio” è davvero adeguato a descrivere le sue doti. È riuscito a compiere veri e propri salti di qualità nella comprensione, nell’ideazione e nell’esecuzione musicale; per lui, come per Wolfang Amadeus Mozart, non sembrava ci fosse un confine tra l’ideazione e l’esecuzione. Parker possedeva anche una straordinaria abilità di comunicare emotivamente con i suoi ascoltatori, sia dal vivo sia su disco: oltre cinquant’anni dopo la sua morte, la sua musica continua ad avere un impatto immediato e significativo su chi l’ascolta.
